The Sea Otter Classic offers two races for road racers.
1. Road Race on Fort Ord Lands.
2. Circuit Race around the Laguna Seca Racetrack.
Since I ride and train on the Fort Ord "Road Race" course I decided to race the circuit race just to have the oppotunity to ride the Laguna Seca racetrack. The race was a timed event of 50 minutes or so with 300 feet of climbing each lap.
The race conditions were cold and windy. The race started out rather slow as most of us were not able to get a good warm-up in before the race. After two laps riders started uping the tempo and we were racing at this point. My only goal was to stay with the pack to the end. The pace stayed high for about 6 laps then slowed a bit. I took advantage of the slowing to move up to near the front. Once near the front a rider asked is I had done the Road Race the day before. I said "no" It was at this point I knew I was a marked man since most to the racers did the road race the day before and were a little spent for the circuit race. I stayed near the front going into the last lap. Going into the climb on the backside I went to the front and started increasing the tempo. Halfway up the climb I looked back only to see the pack was a little strung out but still intact.
I lost contact at the bottom of the desent going into the headwind. I tried to get back to the group but I knew I would not be able to catch back up with the high winds.
I finish 18th out of 25.
