This was my first road race since 1986 and it was almost like I remember. However one thing is different, These CAT 5 guys are much faster than I remember.

The race was a flat 52 mile out and back, out and back with a small hill at the end. The weather was cool but not cold with just a little breeze. The pack held together through the first lap. At the start of the second lap things started to get strung out and I found myself at the back trying to catch back up with the sprinting peloton. It took me over 5 minutes of max effort but I was finally able to get back to the group. After that effort it took me almost 20 minutes to recover. The group settled down until the last few miles going into the hills and on to the finish. Riders started going off the front so I just tried to keep contact with the wheel in front of me. When that rider started to slow I came around and gave it everything I had with 2 Km to go.

I finished 18th out of 35 in the CAT 4/5 group and 2nd out of 6 within my CAT 5 group.
